Mesut Ozil`s withdrawal from Germany`s national team on Sunday night happened in three stages -just like the recent dropout of former world champions of the World Cup in Russia this summer. However, parts of the midfield statement contained so many devastating accusations that the scandal is yet to begin.
DFB Reinhard Grindel, the president of the German Football Union (DFB), was accused by Ozil that he had made him a scapegoat for his incompetence and inability to do his job well, disrespectful to the Turkish root and selfish turn to political propaganda. That is why Grendel will find it difficult to keep up with all the specifics of the political situation in today`s Germany and Europe.
In the first of three parts of Arsenal`s social media playmaker`s communique aimed at explaining the reasons for the decision (together with another national, Ilkaj Gundogan from Manchester City, to meet Turkish President Recep Erdogan in London in May, said that the Gelsenkirchen-born grandson of Turkish immigrants had two hearts;one German and one Turkish.
Although that meeting was the beginning of the scandal, the 29-year-old footballer wrote that he had seen Erdogan many times before, and that his photo with the president was not because of politics or elections, but because of respect for the top management of themy family. He added that the meeting is not a sign of support for Erdogan`s policies, widely attacked by Western politicians over terror against his political opponents and pogrom against freedom of speech. Not meeting the President would mean disrespect for the roots of my ancestors.', said Ozil.
Only he will know if these prominent reasons are entirely sincere. Turkish sports stars who ventured to attack Erdon, for example, former football national Hakan Sukur or NBA Basketball player Enes Kanter, have had severe consequences for themselves and their families, and this would explain why Ozil`s inabilit y to distance himself from the president. Maybe he just thinks re-elected Erdogan recently as a good president of Turkey. In any case, however, the player`s statement completely lacks any remorse, regret or at least admission that the meeting has created an untimely and unwanted distraction of Germany`s entire national team just a few days before leaving for Russia.
No one will dispute that the highly emotional debate followed in the German media has hardly had a profound and long-lasting negative effect on the lineup. Ozil`s refusal to discuss the issue earlier, however, probably largely explains weak public support from his teammates to date.
In the second part of his message, the 2014 world champion criticized his former school, unnamed sponsors and trading partners for not taking his stand, and certain German newspapers about using his picture of Erdon as a far-right propaganda serving the politicalcause them. It`s hard not to agree with Ozil at the last post since tabloid Bild.
